What is Aromatherapy?Aromatherapy can be defined as an alternative form of
medicine, which is holistic in nature and make use of pure essential
oils for an overall treatment - the emotional, intellectual, spiritual
and aesthetic areas, of ones life. Aromatherapy uses essential oils in
two distinct ways - through sense of smell and through skin.
While, external application or inhalation is considered to be the the most effective way to use essential oils, they are also used through skin as massage oil or by osmosis in the bath or by inhalation among other methods. In both ways, essential oils react with hormones & enzymes, increasing the blood circulation. This, in turn, rejuvenates the body with fresh energy and great efficiency, without leaving any toxin behind. The essential oils, on their part, are natural plant extracts from certain species of flowers, grasses, fruits, leaves, roots, seeds and resins etc. and each of them have their own distinctive medicinal as well as healing and beautifying properties. Available in a variety of formulations (More Than 300), essential oil based services range from body oils, lotions, bath oils, hand and foot bath, creams, gels, hair rinses, conditioners etc. Aromatherapy is one of the fastest growing fields in alternative medicine. The Greeks, Romans, and ancient Egyptians all used aromatherapy oils.
The Egyptian physician Imhotep recommended fragrant oils for bathing,
massage, and for embalming their dead nearly 6000 years ago. Imhotep is
the Egyptian god of medicine and healing. Hippocrates, the father of
modern medicine, used aromatherapy baths and scented massage. He used
aromatic fumigations to rid Athens of the plague.
The modern era of aromatherapy is dawned in 1930 when the French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse coined the term aromatherapy for the therapeutic use of essential oils. He was fascinated by the benefits of lavender oil in healing his burned hand without leaving any scars. He started investigating the effect of other essential oils for healing and for their psychotherapeutic benefits. Aromatherapy has also been used for many centuries in India . Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India, uses dried and fresh herbs, as well as aromatic massage as important aspects of treatment. How Does Aromatherapy Work Aromatherapy works when essential oils enter the body
by absorption and inhalation through the pores of the skin. After
inhalation, aromatic signals are sent to the limbic system of the brain,
which impacts the mind and emotions. Application of Aromatherapy can be
divided in two categories : a) Inhalation b) External application Inhalation are of two types (a) direct inhalation and (b) indirect inhalation. In the case of direct inhalation Aromatherapy remedy is applied directly to the effected area. But in indirect inhalation the persons surroundings are treated with the chosen scent. Inhalation is the more widely used method of delivering scent. In earlier days, the herb was burned and the fumes inhaled by the ailing individual for relief. Today, there are many other alternative methods to accomplish inhalation therapy, like use of oil diffusers, potpourri cookers, vaporizers, inhaling the fragrance directly from the bottle or soaking cotton balls etc. Oil diffuser is a machine specially designed as a system of delivering fragrances from an oil or oil blend into the air. Vaporizer is a device used for converting liquid to gaseous form for inhalation. Potpourri is a combination of different aromatic substances generally heated to infuse the air with a pleasing aromatic blend. External application is also employed in both the healing and the magical facets of Aromatherapy. External application include Aromatic bath. Thus through external application, the individual is actually taking in the healing properties of the essential blend through the skin. Studies with brain wave frequency has shown that smelling lavender increases alpha waves in the back of the head, which are associated with relaxation. Fragrance of Jasmine increases beta waves in the front of the head, which are associated with a more alert state. Aromatherapy works the best when it works on the mind and body simultaneously. |
